The desire to engage in meaningful pro bono work for the benefit of our Hong Kong community, despite the perceived difficulties of doing so, is a common aspiration among the in-house legal profession. Since our August 2018 launch of the hard copy version of the Guide for In-house Counsel on Pro Bono Legal Work in Hong Kong (Guide), which tackled the challenges of providing pro bono services head-on, this interest has only continued to grow.
It is heartening to know that our Guide, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, serves a useful role navigating the regulatory and professional issues involved in doing pro-bono work as an in-house counsel. Most importantly, it is now clear that given the different ways in-house counsel can engage in skills-based pro bono work, we can contribute with a positive impact to those in need in Hong Kong.
This web-enabled edition of the Guide, which leverages our original 2018 hard copy version developed with the in kind support of DLA Piper Hong Kong, is being produced to make our Guide even more accessible to ACC HK members, the Hong Kong legal profession, Hong Kong charities and not-for-profit organisations, and the public at large.
Being digital, we’ll also take the opportunity from time to time to update the content, adding to the resources and success stories that we have collected along the way. Of particular use is the growing list of Hong Kong based not-for-profit organisations set out in the Appendices who are keen to engage with in-house counsel for assistance. We encourage you to make the most of our Guide and to return to it on a regular basis.
Neither our first hard copy edition, nor this web-enabled version would have been possible but for the generous support of a number of people. It’s a growing list and we’ve highlighted key individuals and organisations in the Acknowledgements. This Guide would not exist without your time, commitment and hard work – thank you for having joined us as Hong Kong pro bono in-house legal work champions.
We hope this Guide will be a practical resource for all those who come across it, and we encourage the increasingly active participation of our members and all in-house counsel, to support the wider local community by donating your valuable legal and professional experience to assist those in need. Your feedback on how we move the pro bono agenda forward, and on the content of this Guide is most welcome. Feel free to get in touch.
With many thanks
