ACC Australia Magazine: Expanding Cross-border Roles Of Legal Teams In Emerging Southeast Asian Markets
Athistha (Nop) Chitranukroh, a partner in Tilleke & Gibbins' corporate and commercial department and head of the firm's insurance practice, has co-authored an article for The Australian Corporate Lawyer Magazine (produced by The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Australia) addressing some of the key challenges and opportunities facing in-house counsel in Southeast Asian emerging markets.
The article, written in collaboration with Najla Zamri, co-founder and general counsel at Funder Exchange, and Jenny Karlsson, senior business development manager at Lex Mundi, discusses the growing strategic business role of in-house counsel and the expectations that accompany that growth. It then addresses some of the latest legal developments that may affect strategic business decisions in order to proactively meet such expectations—something that is especially useful in commercially similar markets with dramatically different legal systems.
Identifying digital business regulations as one such area, the article then dives deep into substantive issues that counsel in Mainland Southeast Asia should be aware of, drawing on the expertise of a number of Tilleke & Gibbins' emerging market practitioners, including Sophea Sin in Cambodia, Dino Santaniello and Saithong Rattana in Laos, Waewpen Piemwichai in Vietnam, and Nwe Oo in Myanmar.
